A book about traffic, technology and people on the last narrow-gauge railway lines in Sweden, documented from 1970 to 1990. SJ line Växjö-Västervik passenger services remained, freight lines disappeared at a rapid pace and the saga of passenger transport was over in 1984.
How long would the traffic be able to continue with the lack of maintenance that prevailed? Fatal derailments in both Småland and Östergötland meant an abrupt end to SJ's last narrow-gauge traffic in the late 1980s. The individual and well-managed NKlJ railway in Värmland endured until 1991. An era in Swedish railway history was then over.
We follow the traffic and work on the railway in these last decades through a series of interviews with railway staff, from switchmen and train drivers to managers.
The book also looks at DONJ, Dala-Ockelbo-Norrsundets Järnväg and NKLJ, Nordmark-Klarälvens Järnväg and how they invested early on in streamlining with modern freight wagons.
The book is written by Stig Svallhammar who, with this description, says goodbye to the railways that he has followed closely in various roles. 352 pages in A4 format with about 400 pictures/maps.
