Växjö–Västervik The 187 kilometers long railway on the 891 mm gauge was the last of SJ’s narrow-gauge railways to operate a passenger service, prior to its closure on 20 August 1984. The railway ran between Växjö in the south via Hultsfred to Västervik in the north-east and was once part of a considerable network of narrow- gauge lines on the 891-mm gauge, from Örebro in the north to Torsås in the south-east, with branches to Sävsjö in the west to Oskarshamn in the east. Following a historic orientation around the origins of the lines which later came to be part of the Växjö–Västervik railway, Ulf Smedbo presents the line and the environments as they looked in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

His first visit took place in 1973, and he has returned many times over the years. Together with a friend he cycled along the entire route and made pervasive photographic documentation shortly before closure on 20 August 1984; he returned several times in the 1980s and 1990s since parts of the line and the railbuses in various constellations have survived to become established as heritage railways with passenger services.
