In the spring of 1984, the association Rädda Smalspåret (later Föreningen Smalspåret Växjö-Västervik) was formed with the aim of ensuring that the Växjö-Västervik narrow gauge railway would not be closed down. The last passenger trains under SJ's auspices ran on 19 August that year. In the winter of 1986, the last freight traffic ceased and the track lay unused - everything was set for closure and demolition. We can thank these enthusiasts for the fact that a tourist railway was created instead and that most of it still exists, including the Jenny-Virserum section, which is a listed building.
