V\u00e4xj\u00f6-V\u00e4stervik The 187 kilometres long railway on the 891 mm gauge was the last of SJ's narrow-gauge railways to operate a passenger service, prior to its closure on 20 August 1984. The railway ran between V\u00e4xj\u00f6 in the south via Hultsfred to V\u00e4stervik in the north-east and was once part of a considerable network of narrow- gauge lines on the 891-mm gauge, from \u00d6rebro in the north to Tors\u00e5s in the south-east, with branches to S\u00e4vsj\u00f6 in the west to Oskarshamn in the east. Following a historical orientation around the origins of the lines which later came to be part of the V\u00e4xj\u00f6-V\u00e4stervik railway, Ulf Smedbo presents the line and the environments as they looked in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.<\/p>\n
His first visit took place in 1973, and he has returned many times over the years. Together with a friend he cycled along the entire route and made pervasive photographic documentation shortly before closure on 20 August 1984; he returned several times in the 1980s and 1990s since parts of the line and the railbuses in various constellations have survived to become established as heritage railways with passenger services.<\/p>\n
